Walmart & Modern Nursery Furnishings…Really?

Posted by Sarah on Tuesday Aug 26, 2008 Under Babytime Decor

One might wonder how expensive can decorating a nursery be?  Well the answer is—as expensive as you make it of course.  You are furnishing an entire room from scratch so it can add up quickly.  It can be difficult not to be dazzled by mod nurseries that seem to be popping up everywhere.  There are many ways to save and to furnish a nursery on many different kinds of budgets but I am going to focus on one surprising retailer that can help you save.

During my search online for a crib I could afford I decided to take a peak at what Walmart had to offer.  I had pretty much settled on one of Dwell’s cribs at Target but I was discouraged because they sold completely out of that crib in one week and the customer service rep told me on the phone that they could not be sure when the Canadian manufacturer would produce more.  I was itching to kick things off in the nursery because the crib was the first big piece of the puzzle, so I did some more looking.  I couldn’t afford the Oeuf and Nurseryworks cribs or the Stokke round crib so I had to keep looking.  When I went to the baby section on Walmart’s website it looked pretty typical, Winnie the Pooh and Disney themed items which may be for some but were not for me.  I clicked on cribs and after some brief browsing I was met with a modern line  of nursery furnishings called Baby Mod.  Hello, Baby Mod–where have you been for the last couple of weeks? I knew instantly that these were for me.  I read the customer reviews which were all relatively positive, it seems like there is always one person among the 4-star ratings that says that they hate it and its awful. There are three great obviously modern choices there, the Park Lane 3in1 convertible in Espresso, the Olivia 3-in-1 Amber & White, Park Lane 3in1 convertible Amber & White.

To coordinate with your affordable crib, Baby Mod offers other case goods to complete your nursery furnishings. The furniture was a pretty exciting discovery so I continued to browse the site and moved on to their bedding collections. I found the Summersault bedding line, some of my favorites are below, I love the rockets!

Their bedding collections are so affordable and I have noticed that Walmart will put many of the designs on sale from time to time.   I read some of the consumer reviews because I suspected that the product might fade quickly in the wash but the reviews were by in large positive, other buyers said they had purchased the bedding and it laundered well.  I am dissapointed to see that the design Orchard Park is no longer there but there is an image of a nursery found on Ohdeedoh that used the Orchard Park bedding.  At one time the whole set was $30! At that price you can afford to buy multiple sets with different designs when your initial choice gets old and the baby does spit up on the sheet so you’ll need some spares. Walmart also carries the MiGi Splash design and I think that the Summersault collection is a good rival to MiGi and the Dwellbaby textiles.

Once you buy the crib, a surface for changing diapers, a dresser and some sort of chair/rocker/glider; you’ll probably consider some kind of storage piece or bookcase. I considered Ikea’s Expedit bookcase and thought I was sold on that but I’m not close to an Ikea location and shipping rates make it nearly impossible to feel good about buying any Ikea furniture online so….I turned to Walmart yet again.  They have some great storage offerings again manufactured by Baby Mod.

When I thought that I would have to depend on Ikea, Target and thrift and consignment stores; Walmart turned out to be the unsung hero.

I adore the baby mod line at Walmart. Pier 1 Kids used to have some really nice stuff, but the one near my house went out of business. Did all the Pier 1 Kids stores go out of business, or just a few? Furniture business must be especially tough during these hard economic times!

Where did the baby mod bedding at Walmart go? I just found all these rave reviews on blogs like these and now I can’t get the bedding anymore. UGH! Why would they stop selling it if it got such a postitive response? The furniture is still there

    Hi Cloddy,
I checked a couple of weeks ago myself to see if they had expanded on the Orchard Park or Rocket bedding lines and they hadn’t and just as you said they are gone. I did see the Rockets bedding on Ebay once a few months ago. I checked around and found nothing. When you do a google search you get a link but it says “Not Sold Online”. May want to try to contact Walmart customer service and see if they could pull it from a store or they may be able to give you information concerning whether or not they plan to carry something like that in the future.
