Akward Silence

A lot of times when I venture in to older homes, mostly those built between the 1920s to the 1950s I see these akward dormers in the bedrooms that could potentially be a waste of space.  A lot of times they will have tiny closets fitted on either side of the window. Closets that are not really functional.

I recently viewed a house for sale in Southern Pines, NC with small bedrooms upstairs where one would want to maximize every bit of space. I thought of this idea I saw in Better Homes & Garden. The home owner cleverly fashioned a work area out their dormer. This space could also be used a vanity area. Looks like a pretty simple setup, something that could be for the most part purchased at a Home Depot or Lowes. If you’re not handy you might need a carpenter to build the bench seat which could also be opened and used for additional storage or you could always use a chair.

Offices from Martha Stewart Living

Posted by Sarah on Wednesday May 6, 2009 Under Interiors

I think Martha does a lot of things right. One thing that I am particularly nutty for are Martha and her editorial staff’s organizational offerings, specifically in the office.  Here are some images of offices that have graced the pages of past issues of Martha Stewart Living.

Using various hues of chalkboard paint, painter’s tape and a lot of patience, this chalkboard calendar was created

Using dressed up clipboards, a twist on the bulletin board was created.

Easy shelves, gray boxes to hide the mess and a Parsons desk equals visual perfection

More tonal action with a color called Sesame, personal mementos on the desk that make you happy or inspire you

A pattern emerges…It seems that a continuous color combo and storage boxes are the key

Have a small space…how about a hidden office behind sliding doors

The office at the Lily Pond house, fitted in a converted mudroom

If you don’t like the file storage options out there and they can be fairly monotonous, how about fashioning one out of an old trunk
